How much time do YOU spend on these social media sites? Take a look at the averages from Mashable:

Social media now accounts for 18% of time spent online, according to a new infographic.

Since 2006, the amount of time that the average person spent on social-networking sites has more than doubled, from 2.7 hours to 6.9 hours per month. More people are using social media, as well. While only 24% of Americans had a single social-media profile in 2008, 56% of Americans do now.

Between the different social media sites, Facebook is, unsurprisingly, king. The average Facebook user spends almost seven hours each month on the site — that’s well ahead of Tumblr and Pinterest, which tie for second place for most time spent. The average visitor to Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ spends less than half an hour on the site per month.

The below infographic, from Morrison Foerster’s Socially Aware blog, looks at online behavior of Americans, including second-screen habits, demographic patterns and annual changes.

How to Enable 2-Factor for Twitter

  • Should you choose to enroll (and you should, seriously… now), direct yourself on over to your account settings page.
  • Next, select the option to “Require a verification code when I sign in,” which will require a confirmed email address and phone number.
  • If your phone number isn’t already confirmed, Twitter will send your phone a text for verification. Enter the code it gives you to verify your phone, and you’re all ready to go.
  • All of your many existing Twitter apps should continue to work even after you’ve enable two-factor. But if you want to login to your account on new apps or devices, you’ll need to go to your applications page to generate a temporary, single-serving password for that specific login.

The service is currently rolling out, so if you don’t have it yet, you should soon. This is an absurdly easy way to protect yourself from an attack. So even if you don’t think you might be a target, there’s absolutely no reason not to. Because at long last, we’re finally on our way to a safer Twitter Tomorrow. [Twitter]

The Olympics are one of our oldest traditions–a time capsule we revisit every four years. And while its athletes gradually become stronger and faster, other technologies have been advancing exponentially.

This infographic by Pappas Group really puts that idea into perspective. It compares the size of social media in 2008 with 2012, using Olympic events like weight lifting and pole vault to scale just how much this sector has grown.

“When we began to visualize the impact of the Summer Games on branded social media, each category we were looking at took on its own event-like stature. So the idea of using a traditional isometric style to create an Olympic arena of sorts seemed like a natural fit,” explains Art Director Spender Slemenda. “We started thinking of different events and how they would affect the chart data. The integration of the cut-out athletes came quite easily from that.”

The visuals are remarkably effective at fleshing out these stats–let’s just admit it, swimmers competing for first place, even if they just create a bar graph anyway, are far more interesting to look at than a traditional graph. But there’s a larger point that we see in Pappas’s infographic that’s more important than the sheer number of Facebook subscribers or the amount companies like P&G spend on advertisements: The web, Internet, or cloud, whatever you call it, powers entities that expand on the exponential scale, a scale far beyond the frameworks of even the most impressive physical specimens of the human species. And so while it’s not so hard to imagine the Olympics in another hundred years, imagining the digital infrastructure behind them becomes entirely unfathomable.
